Say Something Sunday – Messed Up Media Edition

Say Something SundayIt’s “Say Something Sunday,” a day dedicated, at least on this blog, to personal Size Diversity activism. I did the math and if everyone who views the blog each week did one piece of Size Diversity Activism a week, it would add up to over 1.5 million body positive messages put out into the world this year.  Multiply that times the number of people who might see each of those messages and things start to increase exponentially. To be very clear, nobody is obligated to do activism so if this doesn’t appeal to you that’s totally cool, I’ll be back tomorrow with your regularly scheduled blog post!

Today’s theme is “Messed Up Media” Due to a combination of laziness, lack of scientific literacy, and desperation for eyeballs, The media will print almost anything that anyone says about fat people, making errors from the basic confusion of correlation and causation to ignoring serious issues with study methods, to dangerously bad reporting.  We don’t have to let this go unchecked, we can point out these issues and demand more from reporters. Today’s activism challenge is to leave comments on articles that talk about fat and health, the “obesity epidemic” etc. and to ask questions to reporters who engage in scientifically questionable reporting.

If you want to do more of this kind of thing, consider joining the Rolls Not Trolls group on Facebook, it’s a group created for the specific purpose of putting body positive things in body negative spaces on the internet and supporting each other while we do that.  It’s a secret group so if you want to join just message me on facebook (I’m Ragen Chastain)

Have a great Say Something Sunday!

  1. I find I rarely have the spoons to do this, but when I can summon up the intestinal fortitude, I do leave comments… and then don’t check back to see what kind of hell is being unleashed on my poor little comments.

Still, I do comment at least once in a while.

    • I’m all kinds of in favor of the “stick and move” comment! I don’t leave the comments for the haters and the trolls anyway, I leave them for the people who may be reading the thread and want to see a new perspective. We recently had a thread on this in Rolls not Trolls and I was even a little shocked at how many people said that they first found out about Size Acceptance and HAES from positive comments left in negative threads. And of course you totally get to choose when to do it and when to just walk away!
